“I realized I was a lifelong sufferer of FOMO”

In this age of Trump Brexit ISIS and all the other scary monsters out there to affright us the most insidious of all is FOMO marketing techniques.  It is rooted in Fear and based on Unhappiness.

This condition is so prevalent as a technique and a condition, it was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013.

It’s seen and used so regularly by just about everybody out there marketing their wares & services on every platform going that you don’t even realise you are being preyed upon. Everything from “…Early Bird rates, prices increasing soon, only one day left to book, three more places left…” Some of these are innocently enough designed to get people to commit now instead of delay to the last minute.  Let people know there is limited time or space to be accommodated or included therefore avoiding disappointment.

I’ve used it.  Just like I inadvertently SPAMED people without realising it.  No more excuses FOMO incites FEAR and creates UNHAPPINESS. STOP IT!

Change your marketing behavior to enhance happiness and gratitude by focusing attention that attends to the positive.

Find the humour and entertain.  Attract by appealing to the generosity of your offer and how it enhances life experience for those who participate.  Invite people to join you.  Encourage people to invest!  Fold it into a story to enlighten and educate.

Like any invitation – would you invite people to a party by saying “…everybody but you will be there so what are you waiting for?  RSVP by today or you can’t come…” Actually, some of the newsletters clogging my inbox are offers just like this.  Like a bragging mean girl style Facebook post. Or a threat. I feel the anxiety rise.  There’s something everyone has or knows that I don’t or won’t unless I…. Unsubscribe to this kind of marketing immediately.

Remember the Pixar movie Monsters Inc.? They used fear as their energy source and it was their job to scare the kids they were afraid of and collect the screams…until they discovered that laughter is ten times more powerful than screams!  The Scare Floor ecomes the Laugh Floor.  FOMO can become Open invitation to FUN.
